The Philadelphia Union, which seemed like a dream a month ago, now controls its own destiny. Won the last 3 games and Supporters Shield it’s theirs.

Last month, LAFC were 6 points ahead of the Union with a game in hand. Gareth Bale just arrived. The shield might already be on its way to Los Angeles.

Fast forward to now, the game in hand is gone as LA captures the trophy. With 3 games left in the MLS season, the Union stands alone in MLS. LA is 2 points behind them.

What happened to LA? More importantly, what should the Commonwealth do to put the race to bed?

How was the race?

The Commonwealth and LA are going in two completely different directions. LA have 4 points in their last 6 games. That equates to 14 demerit points. This includes 2 losses wooden spoon Follows San Jose and Houston. Yes, the same Houston side that beat the Union 6-0.

Life is great for the Union so far. The team won 5 consecutive victories. During this period, they outscored their opponents 23-2.

During this period, they opened a 7-point gap from the 2nd place in the Eastern Conference. The club needs only 3 points to win the Eastern Conference. They need just 1 point to return to the CONCACAF Champions League.

Once the cracks in LA’s leadership began to show, the Union didn’t allow it. Jim Curtin has made it clear they will be chasing his second supporters shield in 3 years.

What does the Final Stretch look like?

First, life doesn’t get much easier for LA. They get Houston at home, the only game they need to guarantee 3 points. Then they have to go to Portland. Portland is in the midst of a postseason surge for which they are known. Finally, on the day of the decision, they welcome MLS MVP favorite Hany Mukhtar and Nashville SC.

The way LA played, it would have been shocking to get all 9 points.

The road to unity is easier, but that doesn’t mean anything. Union does not play any playoff team in the last 3 games. However, they are on the road for the next two games. in Atlanta and Charlotte. These are two stereotypical trap games. Both games are tough and they will be looking to rain on the Union’s parade.

The Union ends the season at home against Toronto. Toronto wasn’t very good defensively. They will have nothing to play with. Union can hang 10 goals on them.

LA still owns the first tiebreaker by 19 points, wins. If LA goes down one more time while the Union wins, the tiebreaker will go to goal difference favoring the Union.

The bottom line is that it doesn’t matter what LA does anymore. Everything is in the hands of the Union. Win and they lift the trophy at Subaru Park on decision day.

After the Atlanta game, MLS has a secret 2-week international break at the end of the year. A break could wake up LAFC and chill the Union. Nothing can be accepted until the team name is engraved on the trophy.

A trophy is nice, but there’s more to it

Adding a second trophy in 3 years would be amazing. However, the other reward of being the best team in MLS might be even better.

If the Union wins the Supporters’ Shield, the MLS Cup playoffs go through Subaru Park. As long as the Union plays, whether it’s the Eastern Conference Finals or the MLS Championship itself, they can do it in front of their own fans.

It should be noted that the Union is the only team in MLS that is undefeated at home. They have a 21-game regular season unbeaten streak at home. In a recent horrendous run of league statistics, the Union have won every game at Subaru Park since July. He outscores his opponent 32-3.

The home field award is better than the trophy if it propels the Union to an MLS Cup win.
